Interviews
Deep Desolation - Markiz
29/11/12 || Averatu

Their last album kicks sanctimonious ass IMNSHO, (and it’s not even brutal death), obviously I was keen to interview the Polack weirdo known as Markiz and pick his evil festering mind on a few subjects, and got mine mind picked right the heck back at one point while he made funny evil eyes across the interweb.
Global Domination: Please give us the obligatory introduction to the band, where, what, why, how, which, and uh, when.
Band was formed in Lodz, Poland on the foundation of my previous project, in the middle of year 2009 we recorded our debut album. Initial lineup consisted of Markiz on guitar, Meriath on guitar, Martinous providing vocals, Darek smashed the drums, Piorun fingered the bass. After the first album Darek and Martinous left the band. Meriath then took the vocal duties, new drummer is Wilku . This lineup is working till now.
Does the world really need another black metal band from Poland?
We don’t really care what the world needs, we play music we like, a mixture of black and doom metal shortly speaking. Our lyrics describe the dark side of human nature, psychedelic visions and the Devil. We try not to be followers but a band of its own.
I recently did a review of Besatt and I am also busy with Hyperial’s new EP ”Industry”. I must say I’ve only ever heard good metal from Poland, the standard seems to be pretty high, my favorite being Lost Soul. Why is this, is there a lot of support for metal, are there big festivals, are the drugs better?
Having in mind how many hallucinogenic plants you may have in South Africa , drugs are much worse here in Poland. I am not very optimistic about Polish metal. There are only few bands having their own identity, most of bands do post- Behemoth, but still I can recommend few names: Cultes des Ghoules, Persecutor, Furia, Doombringer, FDS, Deadly Frost, Iugulatus, Primal, Kriegsmaschine, Seagulls Insane And Swans Deceased Mining Out The Void, and around metal band would be Proghma -C, it is worthy check these bands out.
I don’t think there are that many active metal bands in the whole of Africa! I understand the authorities over there clamp down hard on religious issues, like when Marduk were refused visas to perform in Belarus on religious grounds, and Nergal had the case of the torn Bible or something.
The times of witch hunts on religiously offensive bands have passed in Poland, hopefully for good. By the way, don’t confuse Belarus and Poland, we are two different countries, which is obvious. Few gigs were canceled in recent years like the performance of Mayhem for example. But Poland is still a stronghold of the ridiculous religion of the catholic church.

Duh, I look map, I see Poland here, I see Belarus other here.
Just because I’m domicile in Africa not mean I’m suffering fucking
retardation. There are actually many former Yugoslavs living here, they
always argue with the Greeks(many many Greeks) about Macedonia. Moving
on, I have a dvd of a performance by Dark Tranquility in Krakau. The
audience standing like salt pillars while the band is sweating bullets
on stage. Is this a common thing in Poland.
It depends on the music and the band, I’d say Polish audiences are very vivid, maybe Dark Tranquility is for static view!!!! Seeing as you want to know so much about Poland, I have a question about South Africa. Since the fall of apartheid, we know many white people were forced from their homes, is it really dangerous there? Do you feel safe in your home town?
Man you Polacks like exclamation points. As yet people have not been forced out of their homes, but that has been happening and is still happening in Zimbabwe. But many people here initially lost their jobs due to the shift of policy, and lost their homes as a result. Recently a major retailer made it policy to only employ non whites . At one time Johannesburg, (which is where I live) was officially the most dangerous city outside of a war zone , but that honor has now gone to Cape Town. I’ve personally been attacked, my car was mobbed and the windscreen smashed, I’ve been mugged at knife-point once and another time I beat the guy off. Former world boxing champion Corrie “the Sniper” Sanders was recently killed while protecting his daughter during an armed robbery , this is the guy that beat Wladimir Klitschko in 2003, and I’m 2 inches taller than him. Do I feel safe? Not really. Most of my friends have moved to Australia or the UK and even Candanadia of all places. But it’s the wild west down here and I’m a fucking cowboy deluxe, so bring it on.(The metal scene here is just plain pathetic BTW)
Again we’re getting side tracked!! I got the feeling that “Rites of blasphemy” is a concept album. What is the concept if any?
Rites of Blasphemy doesn’t tell single story, five lyrics are written by Meriath, I have written myself one title track, and we used poetry of William Blake translated into Polish language performed in “Mroczny Hymn’‘ song. You can see all the lyrics in the booklet of our album , they tell many stories, where you can see fraction of us and our interests, they relate to ancient gods and rituals in writings of Lovecraft, psychopathic murderers, they speak with irony about religion and Christian god, they show psychedelic orgies with witches, all the lyrics are quite diverse.
So in my review of Rites of blasphemy I said “If Anton Lavey’s church of Satan had to have a house band back in the day, I guess they would have sounded like these guys”. Would that be close to what you’re aiming for?
Having in mind the design of his house with style of Hammer film production company, wild cats and occult gadgets, I would agree with you . I myself share few of his ideas, which are obvious for me, but for me my spiritual and philosophical leaders are: Aleister Crowley, Friedrich Nietzsche, Markiz de Sade, H.P. Lovecraft, Goerges Bataille.
If you had to teach me one essential Polish swear word, what would it be? (so I can swear at you next time we do an interview)
Wygladasz jak cipka, its an expression rather. A fella may feel happy after hearing that. It means you look like pussy.
Thanx man, I think I sprained my tongue trying to pronounce that shit. What does the future hold for Deep Desolation, any tours of festivals lined up.
We want to promote our second full length, record a follow up album
in the future that we are working on now, play live shows, fuck as much
as possible, and worship him . That’s it from Deep Desolation, Lodz,
Poland.
